Trevor Martin

 

Trevor Martin is a criminal lawyer and partner at Martland & Salunier. He primarily acts as defence counsel, representing clients facing investigations, and charges for all types of offences. He also acts for clients in regulatory and disciplinary proceedings, and he is occasoinally retained by the Crown (BC Prosecution Service) to serve as an ad hoc prosecutor.

Trevor  has argued cases at every level of court in British Columbia and in the Supreme Court of Canada, handling both trials and appeals. He has also appeared in the Federal Court of Canada, the Nunavut Court of Justice, and before various administrative decision-makers. He has significant experience representing police officers and extensive experience in youth justice proceedings.

He holds a B.A. (Hon.) from Queen’s University and received his J.D. from what was then called the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law (now the Peter A. Allard School of Law). After law school he clerked at the Supreme Court of British Columbia. He then practiced with the Department of Justice in the BC regional office, before joining Martland & Saulnier.

Trevor is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Criminal Defence Advocacy Society, and the Association of Legal Aid Lawyers. He has volunteered as a supervising lawyer with the UBC Innocence Project, a clinician with Access Pro Bono, and as a coach to law students participating in the Peter Burns Moot Competition. He has instructed police officers on legal aspects of policing at the RCMP Pacific Regional Training Centre. He is a board member of the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program.

He has acted in numerous serious, complex, and high-profile cases. He has significant experience defending charges against police officers and extensive experience handling youth justice files. He is often retained by the Crown (BC Prosecution Service) to act as an ad hoc prosecutor. He also regularly acts in police misconduct and discipline proceedings, and in other administrative briefs with criminal or quasi-criminal elements. He has appeared at all levels of court in British Columbia – litigating both trials and appeals – as well as in Federal Court and before various administrative decision makers.
