On July 29, 2023, the firm’s client was acquitted by a jury of second-degree murder and convicted of the lesser offence of manslaughter, thereby avoiding the mandatory life sentence for murder. Joseph Saulnier and Trevor Martin defended the client at the three-week jury trial. The client testified that the shooting, which was captured on video, was reactionary and unintentional. In closing submissions Mr. Martin relied on the defences of self-defence and provocation. After three days of deliberation, the jury returned the manslaughter verdict. Sentencing will take place in the fall.
